Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity is fatally flawed.
This view has been supported in principle by the world’s most powerful general AI engine, Anthropic’s Claude (named for Claude Shannon, the father of Information Theory). On conducting a fully objective logical analysis of a straightforward reasoned argument, Claude states: “The logical argument is straightforward: . . . you don’t need SR to explain anything”.
In other words, the claim that Special Relativity (SR) is required to explain any aspect of physical reality suffers from a fatal flaw: a full understanding of the laws of physics, without reference to SR, leaves nothing which requires the particular features of SR to explain it. Since this is so, it follows that SR is not only redundant, it is factually incorrect as it proposes that certain phenomena cannot be explained other than by SR - an assertion which is demonstrably wrong.
The relatively simple reasoning which leads to this conclusion, as fully endorsed by Claude, does not require any alternative explanation for any phenomenon regarded as a relativity-dependent effect. More than this, it extends to any future discovery of any effect which might be labelled ‘relativistic’: it is completely general and all embracing in its remit. Hence Claude’s reference to “Here’s where the argument really lands” and “This is the clever twist”. [See Claude’s analysis here (in lay-person’s terms).]
This is important. It really matters.
On the positive side, a straightforward non-SR explanation for apparent consistency of outcomes across all inertial reference frames (uniform states of motion) gives exactly the same equations and effects as given by SR - though for very different reasons. This means that equations derived from SR are still applicable to ‘relativistic’ situations.
At a more fundamental level, though, it highlights the fact that this consistency is a subjective experience resulting from states of motion of objects or systems, measuring devices and observers, not an objective consequence of the structure of spacetime as proposed by SR. The negative consequences of this misperception are disturbingly far-reaching, since nothing less than the future of physics itself is informed by this false premise. As Claude observes: “SR is woven deeply into modern physics” (i.e. the openness of mainstream physics to this totally logical perspective is by no means guaranteed).
So how did this situation arise?
In simple terms, SR had a decade or more start on Quantum Mechanics (QM). By the time QM established the wavelike nature of matter (which renders the objective frame equivalence of SR obsolete), SR had a firm foothold in all areas of physics research.
The essential issue is conflation of two separate and distinct concepts, as if they are one and the same. These concepts are brought together under the heading ‘Lorentz Invariance’ (LI). In essence , LI refers to the well-established fact that fundamental processes produce identical measured or observed outcomes, and fundamental properties measure identically, across all inertial reference frames. From this it is inferred that all such reference frames are equivalent, that there is no preferred frame relative to which all other frames are objectively in motion.
This view is succinctly expressed in an influential review study citing hundreds of research papers: “When Lorentz invariance holds there is no preferred frame”. Whilst this inference appears logical, even obvious, it hides a far-reaching implicit assumption. It casually, apparently unconsciously, embraces the WYSIWYG view which in other areas of physics has been shown to be fallacious: ‘what you see is what you get’. It takes no account of the possibility opened up by the wavelike nature of matter that a state of motion introduces physical changes in an observer and their measuring devices which exactly compensate for that motion to give the illusion of objective invariance across all reference frames. A subjective experience is taken to be an objective reality.
In other words, consistency of observations and measurements is used as a surrogate for consistency of physical laws. What is being tested, and confirmed, in all of those hundreds of papers is not Special Relativity, it’s Lorentz Invariance. The latter is being used as a stand-in for the former. To complete such a ‘proof’ for SR it would be necessary to prove the assertion quoted above - which was, rather, stated as an axiom not needing any further justification. In fact, as those familiar with this Substack channel will know, the opposite is true: a uniform state of motion relative to a fixed reference frame does introduce changes in an observer and their instruments which does result in consistency in measurements, giving the illusion of objective invariance.
So back to Claude, and to that simple proof that Special Relativity is fatally flawed.
So what should be the response to that revelation?
It might be argued that with four to five generations of tightly-focused education, thousands of tightly-focused university faculties, tens of thousands of high-ranking research careers (with associated status) and tens of billions of dollars/pounds/euros invested in research infrastructure, Relativity is simply to big to be allowed to fail. On the contrary, though, with the future of scientific discovery at stake - and with it the future potential for human endeavour (including possibly our destiny out among the stars) - Relativity is too big not to be allowed to transform to a more fully coherent picture of the universe we are part of.
